Welcome to the 11th Annual Pro Wrestling Year-End Awards, here at Enuffa.com, where I hand out nonexistent awards for achievements in a pretend sport. Unlike Pro Wrestling Illustrated and its readers though, I actually pay attention to companies not named WWE at the end of the year, because how much money a wrestling product makes is of little consequence to me when it comes to judging its quality.....
Another year gone, another 12 months of "WWE great, AEW bad, because money" discourse. Ho-lee shit am I tired of hearing that one. As a wrestling fan watching a wrestling show, does the amount of money or people watching said show even enter your mind as you're enjoying or not enjoying it? If it does, I feel like you're doing it wrong.
Yes, WWE once again smashed records for another year, partly due to the exorbitant prices they're now able charge for tickets (They're laughing at you folks), but partly because their product is still legitimately very popular at levels we haven't seen since the Attitude Era. Don't ask me why that's the case, I watched a lot of it in 2024 and I still can't figure it out. Is it better than the unwatchable shit show the company had long become under Vince? Absolutely. Is it the best work WWE has ever done? No. Stop with that hyperbolic nonsense.
Yes, AEW once again struggled with ticket sales and their ratings are down from a year earlier (along with virtually everything else on the dying medium known as cable television. But, and this is a big but, AEW just signed a new TV deal worth over half a billion dollars over three years, which will make them the second-most profitable wrestling company in history. Surely to the folks judging a wrestling product by the amount of money it pulls in this means something, right? RIGHT?? Oh, apparently not, we're still dealing with "AEW circling the drain" bullshit, despite the massive chunk of change it's bringing in now. Weird how quickly the goalposts moved.
NJPW is in a rebuilding period, having lost two more of their top stars in 2024 in Kazuchika Okada and Will Ospreay. And while they haven't figured out who exactly will take the place of those two legendary performers, they have a strong slate of up-and-comers in Shota Umino, Yota Tsuji, Yuye Uemura, David Finlay and Gabe Kidd. Plus Zack Sabre Jr. is carrying the ball admirably for the time being. There's reason to be hopeful about NJPW's future.
So with all that said, let's hand out some awards....
Promotion of the Year
Like I said, revenue does not impress me when I'm watching a wrestling show. My highest priority, as should be the case for everyone I would think, is whether or not the show is enjoyable, exciting and entertaining. WWE's product only occasionally does any of those things for me. WrestleMania XL was a very good two-night show, Backlash France was a very good B-PPV, the revival of Saturday Night's Main Event was pretty good, and the rest of their big shows were middling at best. Their in-ring product still pales in comparison to their competitors and aside from The Bloodline feud that won't die, and the CM Punk-Drew McIntyre storyline that began as two petty douchebags taking worked-shoot snipes at each other and then devolved into two buffoons fighting over a child's trinket, there wasn't much of note in terms of storytelling. Cody Rhodes's big moment at 'Mania was followed by go-nowhere feuds with damaged-goods heels like AJ Styles, Solo Sikoa and Kevin Owens, none of whom ever posed a real threat to his title. The company didn't bother to plan anything meaningful for their top babyface beyond his title win, but no one seems to be bothered by that. Roman Reigns and friends had their neverending family squabbling angle artificially extended by the addition of non-relatives like Tama Tonga and Tanga Loa, and it all led to Roman making up with his original Bloodline gang because "reasons." None of this is very compelling television to me, sorry.
On the other side, despite ticket sales and ratings being down, AEW gave us the best calendar year of PPVs I've ever seen from any wrestling company, plus consistently good weekly TV. Revolution, Dynasty, All Out and Worlds End were all 10/10 shows from where I sit, Forbidden Door and All In scored a 9.5, and Double or Nothing, WrestleDream and Full Gear hit 9. That is an unprecedented run of PPV quality. From a storyline perspective the company could've done better, to be sure. Swerve Strickland's feud with Hangman Page should've headlined Wembley but was forsaken for a feelgood Bryan Danielson moment. And look, Danielson is my favorite wrestler of all time, but I didn't need to see him get an honorary title run at the expense of the company's hottest feud. Fortunately we did get Swerve-Hangman on PPV, but it was a non-title affair on a much smaller stage. The Jon Moxley Death Riders angle started hot as they took the title and the career from Danielson, but they didn't make their intentions clear and still haven't, and thus this angle isn't landing the way it should. But we did get the fantastic Toni Storm-Mariah May feud, Will Ospreay vs. Kyle Fletcher, the return of Jack Perry and his induction into The Elite (another angle that started out great but didn't have the legs it should have), and at long last a proper end to the MJF-Adam Cole feud (which would've been much better had Cole not gotten hurt a year earlier but what can you do?). Also AEW signed three massive free agents in 2024. In addition to the aforementioned Ospreay they scored Kazuchika Okada and Mercedes Moné, three signings that chapped WWE's ass so much Triple H felt compelled to attack Ospreay as "afraid of the grind." Ever the carny shit-weasel, Paul....
So yeah, both companies could've done better with storytelling and compelling feuds in 2024. The difference is one of them was firing on all cylinders in the ring, while the other was largely phoning it in.
For the fifth straight year, the winner is: AEW
Major Show of the Year
As I stated earlier, 2024 gave us no shortage of great PPVs, almost all of them AEW events, but one show had a once-in-a-lifetime vibe about it, thanks to probably the greatest in-ring retirement presentation there's ever been, that of the 40-year veteran Sting. Along with Darby Allin, the former WCW/NWA Champion battled the Young Bucks in a stellar tag team war in front of a packed Greensboro, NC crowd, and sent them home happy and bittersweet. The undercard too was full of memorable bouts, as Will Ospreay tore down the house with Konosuke Takeshita, Samoa Joe, Swerve Strickland and Hangman Page had a story-filled triple threat for the AEW Title, and Eddie Kingston defended the Continental Title against Bryan Danielson, in a match that would've stolen the show on 90+% of shows. Revolution 2024 continued the streak of AEW's first PPV of the year setting the bar for all other shows. A stacked card of excellent matches capped off by the final hurrah of one of the all-time greats.
The winner is: AEW Revolution
Most Disappointing Show
In 2023 WWE presented, for the first time in a long time, a captivating men's Royal Rumble match with Cody Rhodes defying the odds to earn his shot at WrestleMania. We all know how that turned out, he came up short like a goober. So in 2024 the story repeated. Cody had to do it all over again, only this time the Rumble match was devoid of anything particularly eventful. A bunch of undercard guys fought for a while, Cody showed up, CM Punk eventually made his in-ring WWE return after a decade, got hurt taking a routine DDT from Drew McIntyre, and Cody won again. The women's match was just as forgettable (minus Jade Cargill's solid debut), as they booked Bayley to basically run the table just as Rhea Ripley had done the year before, just as Bianca Belair had done two years before that. Ya know, when you routinely have wrestlers last over an hour to win the Rumble it kinda undermines the gargantuan achievement that's meant to be. The two non-Rumble matches were a four-way for the WWE Title with Roman Reigns defending against AJ Styles, Randy Orton and LA Knight, none of whom had a prayer in Hell of beating him, and Kevin Owens vs. Logan Paul for the US Title, easily the best thing on the show. After one largely compelling Rumble PPV in 2023, this event returned to Dullsville in 2024, where it's resided for most of the last twenty years.
The Most Disappointing Major Show of 2024 is: WWE Royal Rumble
Feud of the Year
The conversation about the 2024 feud of the year pisses me off to no end. Why you ask? Because 90% of the discourse is around CM Punk vs. Drew McIntyre. Forget that every Punk feud since he returned to WWE has been about "I don't like you because you were a dick to me last time you were here, let's take lame cheapshots at each other on social media." This feud was fought over a friendship bracelet given to Punk by a random fan. Yeah, that was the McGuffin. A three-dollar string of plastic beads that Drew stole from Phil, which made Phil so angry he SACRIFICED A SURE WIN IN THEIR FIRST MATCH TO GET IT BACK. Punk and Drew managed to have the worst match at SummerSlam 2024 and only really redeemed themselves in their third encounter, a Hell in a Cell match where the stupid bracelet was finally put on the back burner. Spare me the "feud of the year" talk about this turd of an angle.
The ACTUAL feud of the year involved two guys who despise each other on such a primal level, one of them BURNED DOWN THE OTHER'S CHILDHOOD HOME. Yeah, that's just a little bit of a higher stake than "You stole the kiddie arts & crafts project some rando gave me!" Hangman Page, still obsessed with revenge over Swerve breaking into his home last year and threatening his infant child, was driven to absolute madness by Swerve's breakout success and AEW Championship run, and flipped completely to the dark side, burning down the childhood home Swerve had just purchased, dropping him on a cinderblock, injecting him with a sedative, and smashing his head in with a chair. That there is a fucking blood feud, and I don't think we've seen the last of it. There's no contest, Swerve-Hangman wins.
The winner is: Swerve Strickland vs. Hangman Page
Match of the Year
This award gets more and more difficult to narrow down each year, as AEW keeps delivering five-star classics by the shovelful. I know the WWE faithful think Roman Reigns vs. Cody Rhodes was the all-timer of 2024 because Cody finally won the title and because they love surprise run-ins so much (Why was Undertaker involved in this thing?), but let's be honest, Roman-Cody wasn't even the best match at 'Mania (Sami-Gunther smoked it), let alone better than the myriad of Ospreay, Danielson and Strickland classics delivered in 2024. No, the match that lived up to impossibly high expectations and then some took place at AEW Dynasty, between two of the greatest-ever in-ring performers, Will Ospreay and Bryan Danielson. This was a battle befitting the main event of the Tokyo Dome, a battle of sheer athleticism vs. superior technical prowess. After the fastest thirty-two minutes you'll ever see, both men stood in opposite corners, exhausted but firing up, charged at each other, and Ospreay beat Danielson to the punch with a devastating Hidden Blade, followed by a Tiger Driver '91 (a move Ospreay had serious reservations about using) to defeat the greatest of all time. The atmosphere here was electric from start to finish, and the action more than matched it. This was a true all-time banger.
The 2024 Match of the Year is: Will Ospreay vs. Bryan Danielson, AEW Dynasty (4.21.24)
Woman of the Year
This award is a tough one as well, and it's really between two remarkable women's wrestlers. One took a chance on herself a couple years ago, leaving a high-paying but creatively unsatisfying job with WWE to try her hand in NJPW and finally (after a yearlong ankle injury) debut to great fanfare in AEW. The other completely reinvented herself, going from a rocker chick to a fading diva of the silver screen, in the process creating one of the best and most entertaining gimmicks in recent years. The former quickly won the TBS Championship and the NJPW Strong Women's Title, adding the RevPro Women's strap to her collection. The latter held the AEW Women's Title for the better part of a year, only finally losing it to her supposed protégé Mariah May after May savagely attacked her, and is now starting from scratch (including character-wise) to climb her way back up the ranks. On balance, given that her feud with May was one of the best of 2024 and isn't done yet, I have to give the award to Toni. "Chin up, tits out, and watch for the shoe!"
The winner is: "Timeless" Toni Storm
Tag Team of the Year
Okay, this award is gettin' a little ri-goddamn-diculous now. I've been doing these awards for eleven years and for nine of them this particular imaginary trophy has gone to one of two teams. FTR and the Young Bucks have had such a stranglehold on tag team wrestling no other tandem has been able to break through to their level. It's not even fair at this point. Dax and Cash won it in 2022 and 2023 so I guess it's Matt and Nick's turn again. The Bucks won the AEW Tag belts in April, after failing to dethrone Sting and Darby Allin in Sting's retirement match. Their opponents for the now-vacant straps? FTR, in a stellar ladder match. Matt and Nick would abuse their power as EVPs and defend the titles only sporadically, but when they did wrestle their matches were high-quality as always, particularly in the October bout where they lost them to Private Party. The Bucks haven't been seen much on AEW TV of late, scared off by the Death Riders, but they did manage to snag the IWGP Titles on January 5th. I guess they're hoping to duplicate their Enuffa.com three-peat of 2017-2019? That's gotta be it, right?
The Tag Team of the Year is: The Young Bucks
Wrestler of the Year
And finally the big one, the wrestling equivalent of the Best Picture Oscar, this award has a few legitimate contenders. Cody Rhodes fully assumed the mantle of the Face of WWE (ironic since he's still using his AEW presentation), headlining the biggest show of the year and ending Roman's overly long title run. Will Ospreay dazzled audiences with great match after great match after great match, and if I were to award a Most Outstanding Wrestler honor, Will would win the 2024 edition hands-down. But one guy scratched and clawed his way to the top of his promotion, creating a groundswell of organic fan support despite being a heel at the start of the year. One history-making AEW Title reign later and he's one of the most beloved babyfaces in the company (and really should've kept the title longer as far as I'm concerned). He's also the coolest guy in wrestling right now, with the best catchphrase.
The 2024 Wrestle of the Year is: Swerve Strickland
